Lake Kabetogama

We went on an awesome vacation last week. We went up to the boundary waters of Minnesota and Canada. We stayed at Northern Lights Resort on Lake Kabetogama in Vogageurs National Park. It is the kind of vacation where everybody was happy. Ben did lots of fishing, Ryan and I did lots of swimming, plus a few family activities. There was so much to do at the resort...check out their website. I took a tote of Ryan's toys but never had to take them out of the truck.....that is an A++++ thing in my book.

Guess I should tell you who was with us on our trip. Might be easier to identify the people in the photos. Brad, Donna, Lynn, Michael, Colt and ourselves shared a cabin for the week. My dad and Mardi were also up there but at a different resort.

FISHING

One of Ben's many fish of the week. His biggest fish was a 26 inch walleye. Didn't have the camera but he did take a cell phone picture but don't have it on the computer.

While fishing one night we had a visitor.... A BLACK BEAR. It was getting dark so I couldn't get a good photo.

WATER FUN - this is where Ryan and I spent most of our time.

Big Slide

Rolling Log - Uncle Michael was trying to toss Ry off so he wouldn't lose a $10 wager

Trying to run across

The LAUNCH - was the coolest thing. Poor Ryan was pretty scared to do this but he did TWICE.

Ryan made a little girlfriend, Kendall. She is just a couple months younger than Ry. They swam together often.

There goes LYNN! Brave women.

ELLSWORTH ROCK GARDEN TOUR

Our resort took the women on a boat over to visit a rock garden. Wasn't what I expected, much more impressive. A man spent 21 years (1944-1965) creating this masterpiece.

Can you tell what this is?

DUCKS

We had 5 ducks at the resort who seemed to love Ry.

I love this photo of Colt and the ducks

KETTLE FALLS BOAT TOUR

On the last day of our trip we took a national park boat ride over to Kettle Falls. It was a 2 hour ride over and an hour and half back. It was a nice relaxing ride. A park ranger narrarated the ride so we were able to learn a lot about the park and the people who lived in the area many many years ago.

We saw several eagles

More Summer FUN

I want to start with a follow-up from the last post about Veronika. I had to call in some personal favors in order to get all the information completed and neccesary paperwork filled out to be approved for an adoption. Anyone who knows me, knows that I don't ask for help or favors unless I am really in need. I am much more comfortable giving then receiving. But the adoption process forced me to ask for favors. I want to take this opportunity to THANK a few important people....

Reference Letters - I think everyone should ask a family member or friend for a reference letter about parenting. It was a morale booster. Some of your letters brought me to tears. I know each and every one of you had to put time and thought into your letter. We appreciate it.

A huge THANKS
Pat - my aunt - family reference
Lynn - Ben's sister - family reference
Katie - my cousin - she is family but also my friend so she served as a friend reference
Jenn - friend reference
Anna - friend reference
Alisia - friend reference
Kelly - ex-coworker/friend reference

Other THANK YOU'S
Alyssa - preparing housing information without charging us a fee
Marcie - reading my TB test on a weekend so I wouldn't have to make an ER visit
Jenn/Brad & Donna/my grandparents - watching Ryan during our endless appts and meetings
Brad & Donna/Dad & Mardi/my grandparents/Anna -taking care of Ry while we were in Russia

A special thanks to Ben's parents, Brad & Donna. I honestly don't know if we would have started this journey without knowing you guys were in our corner supporting us no matter what decisions we made. Gosh, tons of help with Ryan, helping gather paperwork, being a soundingboard for me, choring, taking care of Jake, not to mention a generous gift. I always tell everyone that I am blessed with the best inlaws!

One last THANKS to our wonderful families and friends for the encouraging and supportive emails, messages and phone calls. Every day in Russia, I looked forward to checking email so I could hear from you guys.

I am sure I forgot to thank someone, I apologize. The journey isn't over so I am sure I will owe many more thank you's in the upcoming months.

Onto the photos

Since we left for Russia on July 4th, we did sparklers with Ryan a little early.

He did sparklers with Grandma and Grandpa while we were gone. He managed to singe his hair while he was at it.

The morning after we got back from Russia, I took Ryan to his last gymnastics class. He really liked gymnastic but I don't think he will be taking it again. Let's just say he doesn't have the acrobatic type of build. Football yes, gymnastics no.

We went to a couple McFarland Park Naturlists Lunchbox programs in July. It is a short nature lesson, a book and a craft on the topic of the week taught by a naturlists for Story County Conservation. This weeks lesson was MUDLUSCIOUS.....

Painting with MUD

Ryan and Jaden posing on the tree

Berry picking, love raspberries. Unlike strawberries, I love picking and eating raspberries.

Hamilton County Fair - on a spur of the moment decision we went to the Trailer Races. What a hilarious riot. It is like a demolation derby but all the vehicles have some kind trailer hitched to it. Before the races, we watch a stunt car show. Cars jumping other cars, cars jumping ramps, truck going all the way around a track on two wheels, etc. I sure hope Ryan (or Ben for that matter) didn't get any bright ideas. I definitely want to go again next year. It was so much fun.

Awesome fireworks after the races

Ryan begged for one ride at the midway. He had fun until ride got really high then he started yelling STOP. Turned out fine though.

Ice Cream Social for playgroup. Doesn't get much better then beautiful weather, great friends, homemade ice cream and about 15 toppings all while playing at the park!

Last night, Donna and I canned and froze 20 quarts of peaches. It wasn't too bad and went pretty smooth with two of us working on it. Looking forward to eating peaches all winter. I also made a fresh peaches pie for supper last night....YUMMY! It tasted great.

Finally, some random photos.

BIG changes in our life

Guess where Ben and I have been since my last blog update???

RUSSIA! Yes, we spent 9 days in a foreign land. Wondering why? Not for vacation that is for sure.

Making her Johnson Family Blog debut......
Our soon to be daughter
Veronika, age 10

Ben and I decided to turn to adoption in April 2008. We chose an adoption agency and started the process in July 2008. We set out to adopt a 2 or 3 year old little girl. Then in June (2009) the adoption agency that we are using brought 6 Russian orphans to Iowa for Camp Hope. That is when we met Veronika. Long story short, we formally met her at 6pm one night then by 10am the next morning we decided to adopt her. Ben and I both felt a strong connection to her.

Here she is with the other Camp Hope kids

She spent the night at our house while at Camp Hope so this is the first family photo

We frantically made travel arrangements, applied for visas, wrapped up some loose ends and were on the plane heading to Russia two weeks later. We will have to make 2 or 3 trips to Russia before we can bring Veronika home. So trip #1 was from July 4-13th. Flights were fine and train ride was fine. We spent the first two days in Petro having medical appts. That was interesting, keep in mind we don't speak any Russian and we look very American. But we had a nice translator who helped us tremdously. After all the medical appts, we went to get Veronika at her orphange that was about 180 miles away. We were able to talk with her medical dr, orphange director and primary caretaker. No big issues to be concerned about, a few small issues that are by all means manageable. When she saw us, she ran to give us a big hug.

Veronika and two of her friends at the children's home. The little girl who is kneeling beside Veronika is being adopted by a family that lives about 10 miles from us.

After we finished at the children's home, we headed back to Petro. We were able to spend the next 5 days with Veronika before she had to return to the children's home. During that time we went to an aquarium, doll museum and did some shopping. We had quite a bit of free time at the apartment also. Ben worked with Veronika on her English by doing workbooks with her and reading books. She has had two years of English in school so does know a little bit of English. The language barrier was tough at times but we were able to communicate the important things. We taught her to play Go Fish, Crazy 8's and Slap Jack. Some games are classics no matter where in the world you are...we played tic-tac-toe and marbles. We went to a DVD store, she picked out several Russian kids movies so we watched a movie every night before bed.

The most important thing we did was file our paperwork with the court system. We will go back to Russia for an adoption court date in a few weeks. Then we have a 10-14 day waiting period after court before we can bring her home. Right now, we are thinking that Ben and I will come back home to wait out the waiting period. Ben will return no matter what, someone was to work. I don't really want to stay that long in a foreign country by myself. So, I will fly back to Russia after the waiting period, pick her up then head to Moscow to apply for her visa. As soon as we get the visa.....we are coming home for good!! It will be a busy end to the summer.

I know...you want to see photos. Unfortunately, she doens't like getting her picture taken unless someone is in the picture with her. This is how most of the pictures of her turned out.....

She made this sandwich all by herself. Too big for her mouth but she did eat the whole thing. Thick slice of bread, ham, cheese, cucumber, bread, cheese then more ham.

I was quite surprised (but happy) when she grabbed a cucumber and ate it plain. Finally, someone to eat veggies with me.

Many hours spent playing cards

Doll Museum - I would really like to get some Russian fairy tales. All these dolls were from all the different tales.

We took a long walk along the water.

This was taken right before she headed back to her children's home. Sad to see her go. But she knows we will back for her.

We had a hard time eating the food over there. Nothing tasted right plus we didn't eat any meat because they don't keep things very cold. We didn't go out to eat very much. We bought groceries and I made our meals at the apartment. I did learn how to make blinI which is similar to crepes. You can stuff them with just about anything. At a restaurant, I had blinI stuffed with salamon and white herb sauce. Ben had blinI stuffed with bananas and chocolate. I made it for breakfast a couple mornings. We ate them with a couple different things butter, jam, sugar, and mashed potatoes. A couple odd things about drinks, most of the water in stores was carbonated -YUCK and drinks were rarely served cold. Everything was served at room temperture including beer. We never once had ice. I asked for ice one time, they had no idea what I was talking about.

I ordered a Shrimp Salad at a restaurant. I was told it was a salad with shimp, sour cream and tomatoes on it. I really do not like tomatoes but I figured I would just pick them off instead of trying to order the salad without tomatoes. When my plate came, it wasn't my idea of salad at all....two big tomatoes with a sour cream and shimp dip. I ate a little of the dip but stayed far away from the tomatoes and their gross slimy seeds.

Anyway, we made it back home. Very happy to see Ryan. We missed him so much. I was so happy to see his smiling face at the airport. It took a couple days but we have caught up on sleep and are back to normal for now.

It seems like a long wait before we can see Veronika again. We are trying not to think about it too much though otherwise it makes ya kind of sad.

If you have any questions about Veronika, please ask. I like talking about her.

We were hoping to meet a 2 or 3 year old little girl to adopt while we were in Russia but unfortunately they didn't have any little girls available at the time. I was greatly disappointed for many reasons. We are going to focus on Veronika for now and maybe one day a little girl/boy will join our family also.

June

Yep, a whole month without blogging. Summer is busy but SO FUN!!

Ryan began June playing blastball (similar to tball) for two week, 3x per week. The program was for 3 and 4 year olds so Ryan was one of the oldest on the team. He was a little bored. I think he will like regular tball much better. Blastball was a good learning experience though.

My dad/Mardi and my grandparents came to visit for a Sunday. Ryan was excited to have someone brave enough to take a ride on his go-kart with him. Nana even got the pleasure of being a passenger on the trip through the mud puddle. Yep.....all splattered with mud. Ride at your own risk!

One of my favorite summer time activities is to take Ryan to the strawberry patch. He didn't last every long picking strawberries this year. It was the first real hot and humid day. He started not feeling well after about 20 minutes. So I gave him a bottle of water and he spent the rest of the time in the shade. I continued picking though. The odd thing is....I love picking strawberries but I don't like eating them.

Ryan, Treyton and Cainan hanging out in the shade eating fresh strawberries

We have had a couple fun playdates in June also. Going to parks, bowling, splash park, wading pools, etc. This photo was taken at my friend, Anna's house. Painting the cardboard house was a success!
Finally SWIMMING LESSONS! Ryan had Red Cross swimming lessons everyday for two weeks. The first day he started out in level 1 but within the first five minutes they moved him up to level 2. He was the youngest in the class but at least they were teaching him stroke techniques instead of learning to put his head under the water and blowing bubbles like in level 1. Anyone who knows Ryan, knows he has no fear of water so putting his head under water was pretty mediocre for him. His favorite part of swimming lessons was jumping off the diving boards. Here are some progression photos.

First: low diving board with a life jacket on

Second: low board with no life jacket

Third: HIGH board with no life jacket but the instructor grabbed him as soon as he hit the water. Ryan begged to go off the high board, the teachers did not require it.

Finally: High board, no life jacket and no instructor catching him. As you can see, the instructor was near by but Ryan jump off the board, hit the water, came back up then swam to the side all by himself. Mom was a little nervous about this but he did great.

We have more news to share with everyone but it will have to wait until the next blog update.
